Job Description

POSITION PURPOSE:
Translation and/or interpretation to assist Head Start direct service staff. To assist in daily classroom activities and routines, with English language learners.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Interpreters
1. Accompany Teachers and Family Engagement Specialists on home visits to assure accurate communication between staff and parents.
2. Provide Language Support services in preschool classrooms, as needed:
• Communicate with children in their home language.
• Maintain an orderly and physically/emotionally safe environment.
• Participate in children's activities.
• Use positive interactions with children including verbal and body language.
• Duties as assigned by staff person in charge.
• Maintain a positive attitude regarding the Head Start program and philosophy.
• Model behaviors that demonstrate an understanding, acceptance and welcoming of diversity.
• Join the children for meals. Model social skills and good eating habits.
3. Interpret during parent meetings, conferences, and other meetings
4. Translate written materials for the program.
5. Model behaviors that demonstrate an understanding, acceptance, and welcoming of diversity.

Language Support Assistant
Classroom Activities
1. Communicate with children in their home language.
2. Maintain an orderly and physically/emotionally safe environment.
3. Participate in children’s activities.
4. Use positive interactions with children including verbal and body language.
5. Duties as assigned by a staff person in charge.
6. Maintain a positive attitude regarding the Head Start program and philosophy.
7. Model behaviors that demonstrate an understanding, acceptance and welcoming of diversity.
8. Join the children for meals. Model social skills and good eating habits. Gently encourage trying new foods.
Bus Monitor (as assigned)
1. Receive bus monitor training, from the Transportation Specialist before assigned to a vehicle, which includes: Child boarding and exiting procedures, sign in/out form, child pick up and drop off procedures, child restraint systems, responses to emergencies, emergency evacuation procedures and transportation policies.
2. Receive direction from the Bus Driver to ensure a safe transportation system.
3. Ride bus to and from class and on field trips: greet children and parents, share information, perform health checks, and monitor children’s behavior for safety at all times.
4. Monitor emergency information changes and keeps Bus Driver abreast of those changes.


INDIVIDUAL AND TEAM EXPECTATIONS
1. Attend staff meetings, center meetings, and/or other workshops/meetings as notified
2. Maintain a positive attitude regarding ORCCA and all its programs along with the Head Start program and philosophy

4. Maintain respect and positive communication regarding all children, families and staff.
5. Maintain confidentiality of client and staff information.
6. Maintain open, two-way communication with staff
7. Accept suggestions and guidance from supervisor and other management staff
8. Seek feedback on job performance and evaluate suggestions and guidance to incorporate in performance
9. Commit to further training. Develop an individual training plan using program tools, as appropriate.
10. Communicate with supervisor regarding any needed changes or concerns with work schedule.
11. Adhere to agency procedures as a mandated child abuse reporter
12. Regular attendance is a requirement of the position.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Interpreters
1. High School Diploma or GED required
2. Ability to pass language proficiency test

Language Support Assistant
1. High School diploma or equivalent required.
2. CDA credential preferred.
3. Two years of paid experience, or a combination of related experience and training.
4. Enroll in Childhood Development Associate (CDA) credential program and complete within two years of employment if the CDA or an AA in Early Childhood Education has not already been earned.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Interpreters
1. Oregon Food Handler’s card or ServSafe® Food Safety Certification within 30 days of hire and update it as required.
2. Must be enrolled in the Oregon Department of Education-Child Care Division Central Background Registry at time of hire and update it as required.

Language Support Assistant
1. Pediatric First Aid/CPR Certification within 30 days of hire and update it as required.
2. Oregon Food Handler’s card or ServSafe® Food Safety Certification within 30 days of hire and update it as required.
3. Must be enrolled in the Oregon Department of Education-Child Care Division Central Background Registry at time of hire and update it as required.
4. Health Appraisal within 30 days of hire and update it as required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
1. Geographic Area: Coos and Curry Counties
2. May lift items up to 51 pounds with or without reasonable accommodations.
3. Access to indoor office, in a climate-controlled environment; may not have access to sunlight. Regular activities outside in a non-climate controlled environment.
4. Regular kneeling, bending, stooping and sitting on the floor.
5. Regular walking and standing for prolonged periods of time.
6. Occasional events outside of the office at irregular hours will be required.
7. Driving to home visits will be required if a function of the position.
8. Interpreters - Attendance at off-site staff training events will be required.

OTHER
1. A current Oregon Driver’s License is required.
2. Proof of automobile liability insurance @ $100,000/300,000 liability limits and maintain such limits.
3. Reliable transportation for getting to work.
4. Must be free from illegal drugs, may be subject to suspicion testing.
